Maine Climate Action Now is made up of progressive, grassroots organizations working together in the pursuit of climate justice. Climate justice requires the recognition that the climate crisis we’re facing was caused by many different factors. These factors include the failures of our political, social and economic systems. Because these failures involve many different systems in our society, the solutions must as well. We call this holistic way of meeting the climate crisis “intersectionality”, because it recognizes that many different factors need to intersect to fully address these issues. In this way, we support a full transformation of many different systems in our world to ensure we have a livable future where all can thrive.

MCAN supports these society-wide changes through many channels, including policy advocacy, educational efforts, in-person actions, focused discussions, art and storytelling workshops, and community building events. Despite the differing missions and organizational structures of MCAN members, we are all united in the shared future we want to see. This future will be sustainable, restorative, and renewable, and its social, economic and energy systems leave people and the planet with a thriving future.
 
MCAN’s staff also facilitates support between coalition members. We incorporate mutual aid strengths and needs assessments as part of our regular check-ins with coalition members. We know that building a stronger movement means bringing many different voices together and matching needs to strengths in an intentional, mutually-reinforcing way.
